Awnings are the part of your rig that gets the most weather and the least respect. Folks deploy them, then a thunderstorm comes through, the wind catches them, and the next thing they're a tangled mess of fabric and bent aluminum hanging off the side of the rig. We replace probably 8-12 awnings a month between June and September.
Most awning damage is preventable - if you retract before the wind picks up, you'll never have an issue. But Florida summer thunderstorms come up fast, and if you're at a campground and the sky goes dark in 15 minutes, the awning's getting caught. We get it. Three things kill awnings: wind, sun, and motor wear. Wind is the headline-grabber - a 25 MPH gust on a fully-deployed 18-foot awning generates more force than the arms are designed to handle, and they bend or break. UV breaks down the fabric over 5-7 years of Florida sun. Motors wear out after 8-10 years of normal use.
The other failure mode we see a lot is misuse: leaving the awning out overnight (rain pools on top, fabric stretches), leaving the awning out while traveling (wind shear at 60 MPH), and operating the awning when it's tilted to one side (twists the rail).

Fabric swaps run 90 minutes. Motor replacements run 2 hours. Full awning replacements run 3-4 hours.

Dometic, Carefree, and Solera motors replaced on-site. We don't pull the awning unless we have to.

Florida-Specific Awning Service Considerations
Florida summer thunderstorms are the awning killer. June through September, plan on retracting your awning every afternoon by 2 PM unless you're standing right by it. We replace dozens of awnings every season that got caught in a 4 PM thunderstorm.
If you can't be there to retract, an automatic wind sensor is worth the money. We install Lippert RVPro and Solera Smart-Awn wind sensors regularly - they retract automatically when wind picks up. About $345-$525 installed.
Emergency Awning Service Service Across Florida
Awning hanging off the side of the rig from wind damage is a same-week call. Don't try to retract it - you'll bind the motor or strip the gear. We come out, cut the fabric free if we have to, and either repair or replace.
If a storm caught your awning and it's still attached but flapping, see if you can get into the rig and operate the retract switch from inside. If the motor still works, it'll usually pull the fabric back even if it's torn. If the motor doesn't work, leave it alone and call us.

Sounds like a slipping clutch in the motor. Usually a $385-$685 motor replacement. Sometimes we can rebuild the motor for less - depends on which brand.
Can I get a Sunbrella upgrade?
Yes - we order Sunbrella in custom sizes for premium awning replacements. Adds about $385 over standard vinyl. Lasts noticeably longer in Florida sun.
My slide topper sags and pools water - is it dying?

If you store your rig with the awning out (some folks do for shade), absolutely yes. If you're hands-on and always retract before storms, you can skip it. Plan on $345-$525 installed.
My awning rail has a tear in the fabric channel - can it be fixed?
Yes, but it's a sub-repair. We weld or rivet a new section in. Plan on $245-$485. If the rail is severely damaged, it's a full awning replacement.
Will my insurance cover wind damage?
